Freshmen Parent Meeting

Dear Freshmen and Parents/Guardians:

I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to South Western High School! Over the summer our school counselors, facilitators, secretaries, custodial and cafeteria staff, and administrators have been planning and preparing to help you have a great freshmen year. We encourage you to learn from every experience at SWHS and continue to develop yourself as an individual, team member, and learner as you go through the next four years.

Please plan to attend a parent meeting on Monday, August 14, 2017.  The meeting will be held at 10:00 am and 6:00 pm in the High School auditorium and is for parents only.  The same information will be shared at both meetings, so please choose one time that accommodates your schedule and plan to attend.

We are very excited and pleased with our Link Crew program which is designed to help you become acclimated to the high school. You will be part of a group that will meet throughout the year beginning the very first day of school on Thursday, August 24, 2017. Since only freshmen attend school on this day, it will allow you to get to know your Link Crew leaders, staff, and friends. You will also follow your course schedule, eat lunch in the cafeteria, and receive your laptop computer.   The District-Owned Electronic Device (laptop) Use Expectations and Procedures Form is included with this letter. Please review this information together prior to the first day of school so user expectations are clear.

While in our high school, you will be assigned an advisor who will be your “go to” facilitator for assistance with anything related to our school, your academic and career goals, and fifth period schedule.

If you would like to know the latest happenings at SWHS I encourage you to visit the Mustang News Blog at http://mustangnews@edublogs.org , South Western High School Facebook page, and our twitter account @swhsmustangs. Please know that we are excited to have you join us in the Mustang Corral, and we will do all that we can to make your experience a positive one. I look forward to seeing you on August 24!

Warmest Regards,

Ms. Cathy A. Harner, Interim Principal

South Western Breaks Ground For New High School Stadium Turf

South Western School District’s Board, Administration, and Capital Campaign
committee broke ground today in preparation for the replacement of the existing natural grass
field with synthetic turf. The project is being paid for in part by a newly launched capital
campaign set to fund a number of athletic improvements over the coming years. The campaign
was launched with an alum’s gift of $250,000.

The new stadium turf will be marked for all sports (football, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse)
and should be completed in time for the football season opener in late August.

South Western is contracting with SPRINTURF, LLC to manufacture and install the turf in the
stadium. They will use an all-natural infill made of cork and coconut fibers instead of recycled
crumb rubber. SPRINTURF has more than 1,000 turf installations in leading sports programs,
colleges, universities, and professional athletic teams across North America and abroad. Its
high-performing, dual-yarn systems are manufactured in the USA at SPRINTURF facilities in
Alabama and Georgia.

South Western is also partnering with First Capital Engineering of York, Pennsylvania for the
stadium renovation. First capital is providing design, permitting, and construction
administration for the project.
