The annual Leadership for Diverse Schools training has begun and I am participating in the 13 sessions. The second session took place at the Clarion Inn and Conference Center in New Cumberland, PA on September 18 and 19. This was an overnight retreat that turned out to be an interesting experience where we completed self awareness activities focused on any personal biases that we may have and how those biases may affect our teaching and relationships at work/school. As we moved through the different activities, I was able to notice that I have more fears about having biases than actual biases! If we just treat everyone with fairness, not worry about where they come from, what their religion preference is, what their gender identity is, we will promote the harmony that helps students learn, teachers teach and parents parent.

At the two-day retreat in September, an interesting activity that our cohort of 35-40 people took part in was one where we reviewed events in history that may have shaped people during different decades, starting with the 1950’s. This was so helpful in our discussions about why our parents may have felt certain ways, acted certain ways, and parented US in certain ways. The small group that I worked with presented the 1970’s. It was not only fun, but informative. Our presentation ended with the six of us singing a song about the 1970’s to the theme of the Brady Bunch tv show!

As a member of the 2016 Leadership for Diverse Schools training, I am looking forward to the monthly meetings to continue to open my mind to diversity and how embracing it will help me, and the students and faculty with whom I work! Thanks for reading.
