The main character must be able to live on his own.  He has to be a hero that can solve problems and adapt to difficult situations.  Also, it would rock if he lived on an island by himself.

Brain power

I need to be challenged when I read.  I do not want to read a book that does not present new ideas or vocabulary to me.  If the book is too easy, it makes me feel like I am being patronized and that I am wasting my time.

Out of this world

When I read, I like to visit new places. I love it when the book takes me to a setting that is fantasy or science fiction based.  I especially like stories that are very based in reality, but have a sense that something is different, something is off.

Red books

This year I am judging my books by their covers.  I am going to read books that have predominately red covers.  I hope that this will get me reading books that I would not normally pick up.

Books need to draw me in with a good hook, interest me with complicated characters, and surprise me with a ironic twist.  If a book is well written it should last a long time and become one of those books that “you just have to read again.”
