About SWHS Music

The South Western School District includes Penn, Manheim, and West Manheim townships located in the southwestern section of York County, Pennsylvania. The District covers 56 square miles and borders the Mason-Dixon Line. The School District surrounds the Borough of Hanover on three sides and is located approximately 15 miles southwest of York, 12 miles east of Gettysburg, 105 miles west of Philadelphia, 40 miles north of Baltimore and 70 miles north of Washington, D. C.

The South Western High School Music Department consists of band, choral, and orchestral programs in addition to various elective courses. The department offers both curricular and extra-curricular ensembles. Within the band department, the Symphonic Band and Concert Band are curricular courses. Extra-curricular groups include: the Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Indoor Percussion Ensemble, Brass Quintet, and the ‘Pit’ Orchestra for the annual musical.

The choral department currently hosts two curricular ensembles: Women’s Chorus and Concert Choir. Extra-curricular opportunities exist with groups such as: the show choir  (Singchronicity), a men’s choir (You’ve Got Male), and a newly formed a capella group (Extreme Measures).

The orchestral department provides two curricular ensembles, the Symphony Orchestra, and the select Chamber Orchestra. Extra-curricular opportunities exist in various string quartets and small ensembles.

All of the performance groups at the high school perform regularly in concerts and in various performances both near and far. The department provides musical entertainment for community events throughout the Hanover area.
